What Compass does with what you write

Your writing goes to a language model provider so the analysis can be produced. Compass holds it on a server for one hour while the questions run, and then deletes it. The analysis itself runs in the background, so the finished report waits on that same server, inside that same hour, until the browser you started it in picks it up. Picking it up deletes it from the server. After that the only copy is in your browser. There is no account, so there is nothing on our side with your name on it.

The draft, while you write it

Your own browser. It stays until you submit it, or until a stop screen clears it. It is never sent anywhere while you are writing.

Your story, between the questions and the report

A server-side store, for one hour, then gone. The hour exists because the two stages need to read the same story. Nothing about Compass needs it after that.

Your story and your answers, to produce the analysis

Sent to a language model provider, who handles it under their own terms. They are the one party in this list we do not control.

The finished report, and the analysis that produces it

While the analysis runs, our server holds how far along it is, your device identifier, and the identifiers for this analysis. When it finishes, the report itself waits there too, for no longer than the hour above, until the browser you started it in collects it. Collecting it deletes it from the server, and anything left uncollected goes when the hour runs out. Only the browser that started the analysis can collect it, so there is no link to it and no second device that can reach it. After that it is in your own browser, until you clear your browsing data, which is why a report you made on your laptop is not on your phone.

A device cookie

A random identifier with no account behind it, so credits and the record below survive a refresh. It stays until you clear it.

Your IP address

Hashed and cut down to sixteen characters before anything is written, and used only to count requests. The address itself is never stored.

The record that you read the disclosures

The device identifier, the time, and which version you read. Kept two years.

What you bought

Credits against the device identifier, plus a hashed form of the receipt email Stripe reports, so support can find your credits if the browser loses them. Card details never touch our servers.

A subscription, if you have one

Filed under a hash of the receipt email Stripe collects at checkout, not under the browser you paid in, so the plan survives a cleared browser or a new phone. Cancelling ends it without deleting the record, and analyses you already have stay yours. A refund is the one thing that takes them back: if we return your money, the analyses it paid for go with it, and you keep the free one that arrives every month.

Getting a plan back on a new browser

A six-digit code sent to the address on file, good for ten minutes and five guesses before it is spent. It moves your subscription and your balance to the browser you are using. It never brings back a report, because a report never lived anywhere but the browser that made it.

A link you can share

Following a link with somebody else's referral code sets a cookie naming who sent it, kept for thirty days. If you go on to a paid analysis inside that window, whoever sent the link earns one more. The cookie carries the code and nothing about you.

Safety counters

When a stop screen fires, a number goes up. Which check fired, and nothing you wrote. Kept ninety days.

Which pages were visited

Our host runs a page counter on every page. It records the address of the page, the referrer, a coarse location, and the browser, under their own terms. It has no access to your story or your report.

Nothing here is sold, and nothing here is used for advertising. There is no login, no profile, and no memory of you between one analysis and the next. Compass cannot show you a report from last month unless the browser you are holding is the one that made it.

Compass is for adults and asks you to confirm that before your first analysis. If you are under 18 and have used it anyway, write to us at the address below and we will delete what can be found from your device identifier.

Write to us and ask. Because there is no account, the honest answer for most requests is that the only copy is in your own browser, and clearing your browsing data is the deletion. For the device identifier and the records hung on it, tell us the identifier and we will delete them.

The disclosures you agreed to carry a version. If what Compass does with your writing changes, the version changes with it and you are asked to read the new one before your next analysis. An agreement that survives the thing it described is not an agreement.
